Disabilitypolitics.ch builds on the ‘Disabled in Politics’ research project. The research project set itself the task of developing practical principles and preparing them in such a way that political parties and authorities can take measures to gradually remove barriers to access to politics. Further information on the research project can be found here.
Based on the findings of the research project, the follow-up project ‘Political participation: self-determination and empowerment for people with disabilities’ (Behindertenpolitik.ch for short) was launched, which empowers people with disabilities in politics. We are convinced that people with disabilities can and should represent themselves. Barriers in politics can be broken down with appropriate means such as wheelchair-accessible event rooms, verbal assistance, sign language interpreters or simple language. However, these resources are often not available at all or only inadequately. This is another reason why we are convinced that more self-advocates are needed in politics.
The project focuses on building a network that mobilises interested people with disabilities with political ambitions and connects them with each other as well as with disability organisations and political parties. Experienced politicians and people with disabilities form tandems that enrich each other. People with disabilities who want to get involved in politics are strengthened and empowered in workshops. An annual conference ensures dialogue, public awareness and visibility. A position paper identifies the barriers to inclusion in Switzerland’s political structures and puts their removal on the political agenda.
Behindertenpoliutik.ch contributes to a more inclusive and democratic policy.
